Headstand in the Wilderness
Yoga 1 Studio offers a sacred space for dedicated yoga
practice, suited to the needs of all individuals; each class may have
a different emphasis: Standing Poses, Backbends, Sun Salutations or Restorative Yoga. Our clientele is composed of baby boomers, young adults and couples from all walks of life, including landscape designers, writers and retired people.
Classes begin with a five-minute silent meditation or
Restorative Yoga posture. Please plan to arrive ten minutes before
class time to set up your place, and discuss any physical considerations
with your yoga instructor. We take our shoes off, turn off our cell phones
and set up our mats for practice. All of the classes are one and a half
hours long. We use yoga props such as sticky mats, blocks, blankets, chairs
and yoga belts (all provided) to create better alignment in the yoga postures,
and to aid in holding the poses longer. Bring your own sticky mat if you
wish.
Class size averages 6 to 8 students. The yoga student
may choose from eight yoga classes each week:
-
Basic Level Yoga for Beginners and Seniors, Tuesday mornings
(9:30-11am) and Thursday mornings (9:30-11am)
-
Mixed Levels Yoga including some Intermediate Yoga
practice (Handstands, Headstands, Elbow Balance, and Upward Bow) on
Thursday evenings (5:30-7pm)
-
Mixed Levels Yoga on Monday mornings (9:30-11am) and
evenings (5:30-7pm); Wednesday mornings (9:30-11am); Thursday evenings,
incorporating some Intermediate practice (5:30-7pm); and Saturday
mornings (9-10:30am)
-
Restorative Yoga features a specialized yoga involving
longer periods of holding poses, with props such as bolsters and blocks,
for deep relaxation. We also include the headstand (Sirsasana 1) and
shoulderstand (Salamba Sarvangasana) or modifications, such as Inverted
Lake Pose (Viparita Karani). Restorative Yoga is offered during regular
Yoga classes and during occasional Sunday workshops, and is especially
appropriate to alleviate fatigue from any activity, such as work,
hiking in Santa Fe or sightseeing. Also, Restorative Yoga may be beneficial
to practice if recovering from an illness.
